United have been accused of scattergun spending in recent years and appeared to be seeking a quick fix when they signed Alexis Sanchez, now 30, on an eye-watering £500,000-a-week four-and-a-half-year contract, 13 months ago.

Having enjoyed an impressive run since the arrival of Solskjaer, Martial believes the Red Devils can finish in the Champions League position at the end of the season.

Victor Lindelof has been rested for the trip to the capital as Manchester United prepare to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

There are no two ways about it - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign as Manchester United caretaker manager has been nothing short of exceptional thus far.

England worldwide Jones is the latest player to commit his future to the club following French forward Anthony Martial and midfielder Scott McTominay who both signed new deals last month under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Manchester United were 4-1 winners against Fulham at Old Trafford in December to record their final victory under Solskjaer's predecessor Jose Mourinho.

Pochettino had seemed to be the obvious choice to take the job permanently when Solskjaer took charge at Old Trafford, Rooney himself backing him for the role.

'The attitude has been, "We know we didn't play well and we have to improve to get to where we are going".

"We have to move slowly because we are fifth at the moment", he said.

Manchester United have made a great start to life under the Norwegian manager and their impressive form shows no signs of stopping.

"You can not be a good leader or a manager without good ultimately it's how they respond to what we tell them and they've been fantastic, so all credit to them".

"Fulham is a character revealer", he said. "We are delighted Phil has committed his future to the club".

"The focus has been around the PSG game for a long time, Chelsea and Liverpool, but they're not the games that will move us up the table".
