While Anthony Davis' playing status for the New Orleans Pelicans' Saturday road game against the Memphis Grizzlies is uncertain, the fact that the team is playing him at all might be due to the NBA's intervention.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A day after trading Marc Gasol to Toronto, the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies says the franchise will retire the center's No. 33 jersey some day in the future.

New Orleans only chose to play Davis after the league reminded the franchise of the rest rule, wherever the team could be levied a $100,000 fine per game that he Saturday Memphis dealt away Gasol and almost shifted Conley but couldn't get teams to meet their demands.

"Marc brings significant playoff experience to our team, which along with his savviness and leadership skills really helps position us for our ultimate postseason goal", Raptors president Masai Ujiri said Thursday night.

Overall, it will be hard to see Gasol in anything other than a Memphis uniform, especially after the way the season started, but keep in mind, this can the chance for him to get the ring he deserves.

A pair of Southwest Division teams on the outside looking in at the playoff picture take the floor in Grind City. On top of that, Greg Monroe and Malachi Richardson were moved in separate deals as a way to gain some roster and financial flexibility.

But the last time that Memphis traded a Gasol brother, it led to Pau Gasol's first championship in 2009, with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gasol has been with the Grizzlies for 11 seasons, which was tied with Russell Westbrook for the fourth-longest tenure with one franchise among active players. Miles, Delon Wright and a second-round pick.

Gasol, 34, is averaging 15.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and a career-high 4.7 assists (which ranks second among National Basketball Association centers, trailing only Nikola Jokic's 7.7).

Gasol also has a $25.6 million player option for next season.

Wright, 26, was averaging 6.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in a depth role with the Raptors this season.

Miles is averaging 5.4 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in 40 contests this year.
