Muscat: To say that the past few months have been transformative for Roma's lead actress Yalitza Aparicio would be an understatement.

Cuaron, 57, also took home the director Oscar for space movie "Gravity" in 2014.

Alfonso Cuarón won Best Director at Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony for his intimate black-and-white drama Roma. And there were plenty of twists when it came to the awards themselves, including The Favourite's Olivia Colman winning Best Actress over Glenn Close, who almost all the awards-pundits had agreed was a sure thing.

Over on the non-fiction side, the documentary Period.

In the acting races, Mahershala Ali was named best supporting actor for playing a black pianist touring the segregated U.S. South in the 1960s-his second Academy Award in three years.

But it's Roma that will get the most attention, as Netflix walked away with one of the top categories at the 2019 Oscars.

This was the eighth time a Mexican feature was nominated in the best foreign language film category.

Roma is also only the fifth film in Oscar history to be nominated for both Foreign Language Film and Best Picture in the same year.

Roma as well as Period. Cuaron shot his own film when frequent collaborator Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki wasn't available and tonight noted, "It's very well known that Billy Wilder had in his office a sign that said 'What would Lubitsch have done?' For me it was 'What would Chivo have done?'" If you are interested to watch Malek's Oscar-winning act and enjoy Queen's musical legacy, the film is available for purchase on Google Play in the rent or buy option.
