Aside from their additions, the Blue Jackets retained forward Artemi Panarin and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, two players eligible to become unrestricted free agents this summer.

In a series of moves before Monday's trade deadline, the Blue Jackets dealt mostly draft picks and prospects for players who can contribute now, and also made a decision to hang on to a pair of pending free-agent superstars for a playoff run. Columbus sent Ottawa forwards Vitaly Abramov and Jonathan Davidsson.

Minor-league defenceman Julius Bergman also goes to the Blue Jackets.

No more than 36 hours after landing Matt Duchene in a deal with the Senators, Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen has acquired Duchene's former linemate Ryan Dzingel as well, as first reported by TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Although the crowd booed during his first couple of shifts, Ottawa fans gave a standing ovation when the Senators played a video tribute for Duchene during the first TV timeout of the game.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are stockpiling draft picks; they have 10 in 2019, including five in the first two rounds. Brassard is a 12-year-veteran who is switching teams for the second time in three weeks after being dealt to Florida by Pittsburgh.

"He definitely wants to play", Shero said of Hall.

"It's one of those things where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't", Kekalainen said.

"This is definitely not, 'okay we're all in for this spring and that's it, we'll start the rebuild, '" Kekalainen added. Panarin and Bobrovsky are extremely likely to walk after this season, with Panarin having halted extension negotiations for the season and Bobrovsky reportedly having issues with coach John Tortorella. He said the Blue Jackets kept their top three forward prospects in Liam Foudy, the 18th pick in the 2018 draft, Alexandre Texier, a second-round pick (No. 45) in the 2017 draft, and Emil Bemstrom, a fourth-round pick (No. 117) in the 2016 draft. "We're going to have a good team next year no matter what happens with the UFAs".

"Without those guys in the lineup, it's tough", said defenseman Cody Ceci, who also could be traded before Monday's deadline. They are one point behind the Blue Jackets for third place and are five points behind the Washington Capitals for second place and are seven points behind the Metropolitan Division leaders New York Islanders. "So I think we have a lot of ingredients you need to compete".
