Some users who attempted to access Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus have experienced problems loading their News Feed, accessing content, and other similar issues.

The company acknowledged the problems in a tweet at 1:49 p.m. ET, saying, "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

"We know this is frustrating, and our team is hard at work to resolve this ASAP", wrote Instagram.

Facebook's main product, its Messenger service, image-sharing site Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp have all been disrupted.

Facebook has not said what the issue is. Some users have regular access, and some have intermittent access.

Facebook, Messenger and Instagram were out primarily in major urban areas across the United States and Europe, along with parts of South America.

The company said the cause of the outage that has affected users globally has not yet been established.

A lot of people are experiencing problems with Facebook being down after the social media company reported an outage.

One said: "Messages are stuck on sending and after I refresh the other person's messages disappear".

In response, users took to Twitter - and the hashtags #facebookdown and #Instagramdown became top trending topics, USA Today reported.

When we tried to change the password to our socials, we were redirected to the same "Oops, an error occurred" page.

Reports of problems with Facebook peaked at over 11,000 worldwide according to Downdetector, a website where users can report problems on apps and websites.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
