President Trump ripped a conspiracy theory suggesting his wife Melania sometimes uses a body double to make appearances - and blamed the media in the process.

"The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it's actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places", wrote Trump.

Trump expressed similar disdain for fake news hits on the first lady in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News this week. "They are only getting more deranged with time!". Hosts of the ABC program debated whether an impostor had traveled with Trump.

Co-host Brian Kilmeade remarked as an aside, "There's no one that has the president's back like the first lady". Trump was referring to President John F. Kennedy's wife, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who often was referred to as "Jackie O" after she remarried following Kennedy's assassination.

Stephanie Grisham, Ms Trump's representative, responded in an email to ABC it was "sad" the female presenters "spend so much time attacking another woman, whose only goal is to help children".

"Yesterday's show went beyond the petty, mean-girl spirit that we've grown accustomed to", she added.

The conspiracy theory even featured in a segment on the popular chat show "The View". "They want to see that", she said, prompting Behar to note that Obama had in fact produced his birth certificate. "The tornadoes were frightful, but she wanted to go, and I said, 'Good, let's go, '" Trump said, referring to Mrs. Trump.

"She's attractive and we're doing this in jest", Navarro replied, also pointing out that people had criticized former First Lady Michelle Obama in a similar way.
