Tiger Woods just imploded on TPC's famed island green

"I feel good about both", Woods, the only golfer to win the Players both when it was staged in March and May, told reporters after getting in nine holes.

Tiger Woods's scorecard on Friday contained 17 good holes and one terrible one - a really, really bad one.

His 69th go-round included two balls in the water, seven shots overall and a career-worst quadruple bogey in front of a stunned and quiet crowd.

With his fifth shot, Woods finally found the green and two-putted for a 7 only moments after he had come within two shots of the lead. He was tied for 31st as afternoon play progressed.

The common thought about TPC Sawgrass is that it's not a course you want to try to play from behind at, because forcing the issue usually leads to big numbers. "I think it's a great test". "It's a nice gift, an opportunity".

Historically the course has been more hard in March as compared to May.

At one under par Woods trailed leader Kevin Kisner by seven shots, Kisner having picked up four shots in his first 10 holes to lead by one from compatriots Luke List and Keegan Bradley, Scotland's Russell Knox and England's Tommy Fleetwood. He is among those who leave the pin in for putts on the green, and Furyk hammered his 40-foot birdie attempt. That's his worst strokes gained total on a single hole since the ShotLink era began in 2003 - the only other that even comes close is a -3.914 after a quadruple bogey at the par-4 first hole in Round 2 of the 2013 BMW Championship at Conway Farms.

"There's no bones about it, you still have to hit the shots around here", Furyk said. "The ball doesn't fly as far and the golf course just plays slower". Since 1995, The Players has produced under-par rounds 31 percent of the time in March and 41 percent in May. It was his 80th PGA Tour victory.

The runner-up at The Players was the most valuable to him.

He recovered on No. 17 with a par on No. 18. "And being able to do that twice, that builds confidence. This is an important week and I'll let you guys know later in the week". It was in 2000, and Sutton made a six on the 17th hole in the third round. He had four cortisone shots a week ago, felt as though they worked and showed in his eight-birdie round that he was feeling better.

On Thursday, Woods will be making his 19th start in this event.

Woods put the peg in the ground and stared down an island green he'd faced 68 times as a pro. He hit his third shot too long, bouncing it off the green and finding the pond again.

He was 5 under, tied for eighth when he stepped on the tee.

"I was pretty ticked, no doubt about that, and I was bound and determined to get it all back and get it back to (5 under), and I thought that would have been a hell of a fight". Woods says with a fused lower back, the stress from a golf swing has to go somewhere.

"Anybody who makes the cut can have a chance to win this golf tournament".
