Trump's escalated attacks against McCain suggest the president can not resist reviving old battles, many of which he renewed over the weekend in a series of tweets that criticized McCain, former Vice President Joe Biden, Democrats, special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the media and more.

Over the weekend, Trump took to Twitter to criticize McCain, who died of brain cancer in August at the age of 81.

"He spends his weekend obsessing over great men because he knows it and I know it and all of you know it - he will never be a great man", said Meghan McCain, on ABC's "The View", which she co-hosts.

"I'm very unhappy he didn't repeal and replace Obamacare", Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office. When asked by a reporter why he still attacks McCain months after his death, Trump explained that it has to do, in part, with his vote on Obamacare.

The president has been at odds with McCain since before he entered the White House. "I was never a fan of John McCain and I never will be".

"I think that's disgraceful - plus there are other things", Trump added.

Trump was referring to McCain's vote against the GOP Senate majority's attempt to repeal former President Barack Obama's signature health-care law in 2017.

Among the tweets was a claim that McCain had finished "last in his class" at the US Naval Academy.

Later that day, Trump retweeted a tweet from a supporter who wrote that "millions of Americans truly LOVE President Trump, not McCain". Instead, Trump primarily criticized the late senator for not supporting his efforts to abolish Obamacare.

"My father was his kryptonite in life and he was kryptonite in death", she said. Okay? I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump - I have the tough people, but they don't play it tough - until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.
