Sterling's first England treble gave the Manchester City forward five goals in his last three worldwide appearances following his brace in the October win against Spain.

While reeling away towards the stands, he lifted his top and revealed a commemorative shirt paying tribute to Damary Dawkins, a schoolboy who passed away on Sunday.

"So I thought I had to do something for the family, give them something to smile about".

Since 1980, 18 hat-tricks have been scored for the Three Lions (although a couple of players have done it more than once).

"I am sure that he is going to go far in his career and I am just happy I am sharing a pitch with him".

"I think that comes into everything: how much we expose them to the public, how much we put them into commercial situations", Southgate said of their responsibility to young players. Great first goal - getting in the six-yard box.

The England manager Gareth Southgate has spelled out the challenge now facing Jack Grealish if the rejuvenated Aston Villa playmaker wants to make his England senior debut: he needs to be playing in the Premier League. He has looked like that all week in training. That's why, maybe in the past, some countries like Croatia or Yugoslavia have found really bright young talents because they've said: 'Right, we haven't got huge numbers of players, so let's stick them in'.

"The third goal meant that he could enjoy it and breathe a little bit more when he went in, so it was a ideal game for him to come into, really, at that point, and similarly with Callum", Southgate said. That will of course be the dream of every player involved in the England set-up, with the added incentive that both semi-finals and the finale of next year's continental showpiece will take place at the home of English football: Wembley Stadium.

"I think he's really matured as a person and a footballer".

The 13-year-old, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was nine, played in Crystal Palace's development squad.

The former Liverpool attacker also endured criticism this season for having a tattoo of a gun, which he claimed he was a tribute to his late father.
