Manchester United 'refusing to give up on Alexis Sanchez'

"Manchester City and Liverpool are more of a team than Barcelona - and Liverpool are more of a team than City".

Solskjaer's men are now in the fifth position on the Premier League table this season with 58 points from 30 games. He had turned the club into a rancid pool of mediocrity, going as far as to say that the Red Devils were "not ready to dominate", which rubbed United fans the wrong way and led to his eventual downfall.

Manchester United's improvement under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should not fool the club into thinking that they do not need to appoint a director of football, Rory Smith, The New York Times' chief soccer correspondent tells this week's Game podcast.

"So when it goes away from that, you are bound to get anxious because Man United play a brand of football that everyone talks about and you miss it when they don't do it".

While quality players, obviously, help a side perform well, the same players under Mourinho seemed to be running around the pitch like puppets with an invisible string pulling them.

But the caretaker manager's former United team-mate Phil Neville has warned him that links to Pochettino will not go away and that the Argentine will be tipped to replace him if Solskjaer suffers a downturn in performances or results at any point.

Despite winning the FA Cup with United in 2016, Van Gaal and his staff were sacked just two days later and replaced by Jose Mourinho. United have won 14 of 19 games under Solskjaer and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League against the odds.

"It is defensive, counter-attacking football". It is Manchester United. Spurs are a better prospect, as a club in his own image with a squad of young, hungry players all capable of playing attractive football. The banners and songs serenading Solskjaer have also brought back a feel-good factor at the club, and Old Trafford.

Yet Van Gaal suggests the only reason why Solskjaer is proving to be more popular in the role than his predecessor is down to the winning run he has put together, as he insists the club are still using tactics that would not have been embraced by legendary United boss Alex Ferguson.

Woodward took the first steps towards ending that approach last summer when United chose not to pursue Jose Mourinho's interest in Chelsea midfielder Willian, 30, and 29-year-old Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.
