What happened: South Korea is on pace to commercially deploy the world's first 5G services this week ahead of companies like Verizon in the USA, which plans to start launching its new networks on April. 11.

Korea on Wednesday launched the world's first super-fast 5G mobile phone service, with connections starting at 11 p.m.

Its smaller rival KT Corp.'s unlimited 5G data plans are priced over 80,000 won, which come with free worldwide roaming service in South Korea and 185 nations. Verizon has already launched the 5G Moto Mod for the Moto Z3, which is a new accessory for the 2018 phone that creates a massive handset that can connect to 5G networks - assuming there's enough coverage, of course.

The latest rumor about the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G comes from prolific leak artist Evan Blass.

5G will change the landscape of the gaming industry as it allows games streamed with minimal delay to be played on smartphones, SK Telecom's Ryu said.

SK Teleom's firstcomers for 5G mobile service including figure skater Kim Yu-na (3rd from left) pose with their phones in Seoul on Wednesday, a day ahead of the official launch.

The US has pressed its allies and major economies to avoid 5G solutions from Chinese-owned telecom giant Huawei, citing security risks that technological backdoors could give Beijing access to 5G-connected utilities and other components. The South Korean handset and electronics maker warned investors that its profit in the first quarter will be in the neighborhood of 6.1-6.3 trillion Korean won (~$5.36-$5.4 billion in United States currency), which in a vacuum is pretty impressive.

US carriers have launched 5G services in limited areas and not on all devices as early as past year.

Full-fledged nationwide 5G service is still more than a year away.

South Korea has become on Thursday the first country to offer commercial fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication, after three of its telephone companies announced two days before the launch of this new technology.
