UCLA's men's basketball program's search for a new head coach appears to be over.

Cronin, at least publicly, was Guerrero's fourth option but still touts a sturdy résumé after 13 seasons at Cincinnati and three before that at Murray State. "To be able to join such a world-class institution is truly a privilege, and I can't wait to get started in Westwood".

The Bruins pursued a number of high-profile coaches before reaching a deal with Cronin, terms of which were not immediately available.

After a less than fortunate series of events in the coaching search, UCLA settled for their plan D, Mick Cronin.

Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers, a UCLA letterman who assisted with the search, said that it was important the school found a coach who "really wants to be here".

Life certainly is a feisty mistress for the UCLA basketball program, last week they were courting John Calipari.

Cronin will be formally introduced to the UCLA community and to media on campus this Wednesday morning.

The team was eliminated in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament Round of 64. Cronin's teams at Cincinnati rank as one of just two in the nation (along with Virginia) to be listed among the nation's top 25 in scoring defense each of the past seven seasons.

Cronin built a reputation as a recruiter who could identify and lure top talent to Cincinnati, including future National Basketball Association players like Lance Stephenson of the LA Lakers. Among the incoming recruits are Jaime Jaquez and Jake Kyman. After going 61-68 in his first four seasons with the program, Cronin and Cincinnati made the NCAA tournament nine straight times, posting a.748 winning percentage in that stretch.

But the drop-off was swift for a school that owns a record 11 national championships.

John Calipari famously had "interest" in UCLA, only to return to Kentucky on a lifetime deal.

Murry Bartow bowed out of consideration for the permanent job in March.
