At least 5 killed as huge storm and tornadoes sweep US

Two wind gusts as powerful as 80 miles per hour were reported in the Salem County township of Lower Alloways Creek by the New Jersey Weather & Climate Network between 3:25 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service says more than a dozen tornadoes have been confirmed in the South after a weekend of violent weather that left at least eight people dead.

The National Weather Service detected a possible twister on radar, but it's unclear whether a tornado or straight-line winds caused the damage.

In Texas, authorities said a woman died on Saturday night when a tornado destroyed her mobile home, CNN reported.

The weather service confirmed Monday that a tornado significantly damaged a lumber company Sunday evening in Starbrick, in northern Pennsylvania.

Two children, siblings aged three and eight, were killed on Saturday when a tree fell on the auto in which they were sitting in Pollok, Texas, said a spokeswoman for the Angelina County Sheriff's Department.

The severe weather threat Saturday and Sunday placed almost 100 million Americans at risk of unsafe storms, tornadoes, hail and severe wind gusts, CNN Meteorologist Haley Brink said.

Tour leader Amanda O'Brien said that after some confusion, American Airlines representatives were able to get them on their way to Beijing late Sunday morning.

Almost 2,300 United States flights were cancelled, more than 90% of them at airports in Chicago, Houston, Texas, Charlotte, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ohio and a dozen major airports on the Eastern Seaboard.

Davis said the strong winds and downed trees that were reported in several counties were likely caused by a very strong squall line, a narrow band of thunderstorms.

Vicksburg, Mississippi, was also affected by a tornado.

The fire station in Hamilton was destroyed, as were multiple homes and a retail center. We have a lot of flooding. The watches mean conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form.
