Sanders had refused to release his tax returns throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, and had taken heavy incoming fire from allies of his Democratic rivals this year for not putting out his returns. He declined to do so, disclosing only his tax return for 2014.

Governor Jay Inslee of Washington released 12 years of tax returns, showing that he and his wife earned US$202,912 last year. It did very well.

So far, those have shown that Harris and her husband made the most money, paid the most in taxes and were taxed at the highest rate. The documents underscore how much money the populist presidential candidate has earned in recent years, as his public profile has risen.

The interest in presidential contenders and their taxes has jumped since Republican President Donald Trump shattered decades of tradition during the 2016 campaign by refusing to release his returns - a stance he has continued since entering the White House.

A video produced last week by ThinkProgress entitled, "Bernie's Millionaire Problem", criticized Sanders by attempting to paint him as a hypocrite for asking wealthy Americans to pay their "fair share" in taxes.

Over the past five years, the couple has paid over $2.2 million in federal taxes at an average effective tax rate of about 33 percent. They paid just under $700,000 in federal taxes, a tax rate of almost 37 percent.

Former New Hampshire Democratic Party chair Kathy Sullivan said that while she does not see a problem with Sanders' financial status squaring with his commitment to curbing income inequality, she was struck by the way he handled questions about his wealth.

Trump had telegraphed his Treasury secretary's move Wednesday, telling reporters he wouldn't release his tax returns since he's still under audit. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota - have released tax records to varying degrees.

The returns provide a more detailed look at Sanders' finances than when he ran for president in 2016.

Up against criticism that, like Trump, Sanders was not being transparent, the senator said he was going to release them on Tax Day and urged the president to do the same.
